Bonelli’s Eagle "landed" in the schools of East Attica

Bonelli’s Eagle "landed" in the schools of East Attica

Did you know that an endangered eagle roams the skies in Attica?

Shortly before the schools closedfor summer, the Environmental Education Team of the Hellenic ORNITHOLOGICAL Society visited four schools in Attica to introduce the children to their featheredneighbour:, the Bonelli’s Eagle. In the week between 17th and 26th of May 2023, we visited the primary schools of East Attica, where together with more than 390 children and their teachers, we got to know Bonelli’s Eagle better, we "discovered" interesting facts about its life and adventures, as well as the problems it faces in the area.

In all schools we visited, children were amazed that such a majestic eagle lives and nests so close to them. So we visited the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Primary School of Lavrio, as well as the Primary School of Palaia Fokaia, which are located in areas where Bonelli’s Eagle is active, in some of them even flies over the school yard!

The children, excited and full of questions, watched, during the first hour of our visit, the educational presentation "Meeting the Bonelli’s Eagle, the eagle of the Mediterranean sea" and then they became young Bonelli’s Eagles themselves, by experiencing through gaming the challenges that the Bonelli’s Eagle faces until reaches its adulthood.

So, the schools were full of "Bonelli’s Eagle young chicks" which, just like in their nature, made their first flight at the end of May! After two hours of playful occupation with the Bonelli’s Eagle and the places needed to survive, the children were able to enthusiastically suggest solutions and actions to help their new friend Bonelli’s Eagle survive in their area.

We renewed our appointment with all the students & teachers - members of the Student Action Group for Bonelli’s Eagle for the next school year. Until then, our shared goal is to make Bonelli’s Eagle famous to EVERYONE!
