Young Bonelli’s Eagles waiting for their ringing

Young Bonelli’s Eagles waiting for their ringing

The field working teams of LIFE Bonelli eastMed Project started ringing and tagging the young Bonelli’s Eagles with satellite transmitters,, in the beginning of April and continued undeterred until the end of May 2023. Missions targeted the already known nests but also some new ones, which were found during this year's monitoring of reproduction success for the species!

The first Bonelli’s eagle was ringed on 13/04/2023 in Kyklamino gorge in Chania, Crete, while ringing of chicks followed in Aradaina gorge of Chania, in Ikaria, in Kasos, in Saria, in Kalymnos and in Nisyros. In the days to follow, Naxos, Tinos, Andros, Karpathos and the nests of Peloponnese, Attica and Evia will be the next ones visited, while some late-born chicks in Rhodes will be the last of the season.

In the process of approaching the nests and capturing the chicks, the researchers of the LIFE Bonelli eastMed Project are assisted by volunteering climbers/canyoners and professionals for working at height from all over the country.
